Eric Ehlenberger MD
Eric Ehlenberger MD grew up in southern California and attended college at U.C. Davis where he designed an independent major in psychophysiology, obtaining his B.S. degree with the intention of pursuing a career in research in altered states of consciousness. To prepare for this research career he attended medical school at University of Southern California obtaining his MD degree. At this point, Dr. Ehlenberger came to New Orleans to initially study Family Medicine, then Emergency Medicine and he completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. By now his plan to perform research in altered states of consciousness was set aside as he pursued his career in emergency medicine.
Dr. Ehlenberger spent the next 30 years practicing emergency medicine full time, including being Director of the Emergency Departments at Southwest Regional Medical Center and Gulfcoast Community Hospital in MS through 1989. In 1989, he started at Tulane Medical Center E.R. where he worked full time for 19 years. Following this he worked part time at Ochsner West Bank E.R. through 2008.
In 2008, interested in pursuing a new direction in his medical career, Dr. Ehlenberger began his studies in chronic pain management becoming certified, then advanced certified, in Pain Management by the American Academy of Pain Management. To better understand the issues of substance abuse, he then pursued training in Addiction Medicine becoming certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Ehlenberger purchased Accurate Clinic in 2009 and began developing his unique, multi-disciplinary pain management practice that includes physical therapy, psychotherapy and addiction recovery as well as naturopathic and complementary and alternative medicine. Supplementing his interest in pain and addiction medicine, Dr. Ehlenberger recognized the growing importance of the role of medical genetics and began incorporating genetic testing as part of his evaluation of pain and addiction. He participated in the publication of two research articles in the field of pain management and genetics and he continues to be active in research, recently completing another study and he is now currently engaged in three more studies.
As a consequence of his efforts to facilitate well-needed weight loss in his chronic pain patients, Dr. Ehlenberger began training in Weight Loss under the tutelage of bariatric specialist Dr. Sass Moulavi in Boca Raton, FL. Combining his experience in chronic pain, addiction and medical genetics, Dr. Ehlenberger recently developed a new weight loss program integrating dietary management, management of addictive eating behaviors, genetic testing and complementary and alternative medicine treatment options.
On a more personal note, Dr. Ehlenberger enjoys art with a particular interest in abstract sculpture. Paralleling his medical career, he has pursued a career as a sculptor working in neon, glass and metal. His sculpture career has included a number of private gallery and museum exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. His sculptures can be seen at Accurate Clinic and are on view at Venusian Gardens Art Gallery in the Marigny.
Dr. Ehlenberger is married to his wife, Indra, who originally comes from Malaysia and an early career in modeling. She currently assists in the administrative management of Accurate Clinic and Venusian Gardens and she share’s Dr. Ehlenberger’s joy in raising their English Bull Terrier, Zeus.
