Antidepressants
The term “antidepressant,” as applied to medications used to treat depression, is somewhat of a misnomer due to the important fact that this class of medications is used as often, if not more often, to treat other conditions including chronic pain, anxiety and psychiatric conditions other than depression. It might be more accurate to describe this class of medications as “neuromodulators” because in fact they modulate the nervous system in ways that are effective for multiple conditions.
Anti-depression drugs, which increase serotonin and dopamine levels, include:
Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SRI)
Trazodone
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s):
Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, and Celexa
Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRI’s):
Cymbalta, Effexor, Savella
Tricylic Antidepressants (TCAs):
Elavil, Doxepin, Desipramine, Imipramine
Monoamine Oxigenase inhibitors (MAOIs):
Nardil, Parnate, Marplan and Emsam)
