Linalool

 

Linalool is frequently used in aromatherapy for anxiety, stress, pain, and to improve sleep.

 

This treatise focuses on the essential oils containing linalool for potential use as aromatherapy with room diffusers. The therapeutic. use of linalool in aromatherapy may be as a standalone use with a room diffuser or for synergistic use while inhaling cannabis products.

Essential Oils Rich in Linalool

Linalool is abundant in in lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), bergamot and sweet basil but can also be found in ylang-ylang, mint, cinnamon and coriander. Essential lavender oil generally contains about:

  • 37% linalool,
  • 42% linalyl acetate
  • 5.1% β-caryophyllene

In addition to these dominant three components, lavender also contains moderate levels of  (Z)-beta-ocimene, (E)-beta- ocimene, and lavandulyl acetate.

However, the chemical composition of lavender oil depends on the lavender species and the geographic region where it is grown as well as growing conditions and how it is processed (see lavender oil below).

Key Benefits of Linalool:

  1. Linalool:  Strong pain and anxiety benefits. Linalool is frequently used in aromatherapy for anxiety, stress, pain, and to improve sleepLinalyl acetate, the other primary terpenoid in lavender, hydrolyses to linalool in the stomach when lavender oil is ingested such as in use of the over-the-counter product, CalmAid.

2. Thyme ct. Linalool (Thymus vulgaris)

  • Contains 42% linalool, making it one of the gentlest thyme chemotypes with soothing properties .

3. Basil Linalool (Ocimum basilicum ct. linalool)

  • A sweeter, gentler basil variety with high linalool levels, ideal for relaxation and skincare .

4. Neroli (Citrus aurantium)

  • Known for its floral-citrus scent and stress-relieving effects .

5. Coriander Seed (Coriandrum sativum)

  • Contains significant linalool, contributing to its spicy-sweet aroma .

6. Bergamot Mint (Mentha citrata)

  • Combines minty freshness with linalool’s calming benefits .

7. Rosalina (Melaleuca ericifolia)*

  • A eucalyptus relative with a lavender-like scent due to linalool .

8. Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)

  • Valued for hormonal balance and relaxation .

9. Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium)

  • Distilled from citrus leaves, offering a floral-woody aroma .

Essential Oils Rich in Linalool and beta-Caryophyllene

Beta-caryophyllene (BCP), known for its potential therapeutic benefits for pain and anxiety, can be paired with another terpene, linalool,  also known for the same benefits, pain and especially anxiety.

  2. Beta-Caryophyllene: Reduces inflammation, pain, and anxiety
